The largest private ambulance service in the world set up to help the poor people of Pakistan.
Edhi Land Ambulance Service began more than 50 years ago with Abdul Sattar Edhi himself standing on a street corner collecting funds for his first ambulance, a second hand Hillman Pickup Truck. Now, Edhi is omnipresent in Pakistan with his ambulances parked on every few kilometers and helping more and more people in need every day.
In 2014, the Karachi-based Edhi Foundation ambulance service has grown to be the largest private ambulance service in the world, with almost 2000 ambulances across Pakistan, receiving upwards of 4,000 calls a day.
“People depend on the ambulances of Edhi.” Says Kazmi, secretary to the foundation’s head, Abdul Sattar Edhi.
But with 120 ambulances in Karachi and over 1,000 nationwide, backed by 28 rescue boats and an air rescue service comprising of one helicopter and three fixed-wing aircraft, the word ‘depend’ is nothing short of an understatement.
Edhi Ambulance services include:
- Ambulance Service
- Emergency Medical Service
- Patient Transfer Service
- Air Ambulance Service
- Marine Service
- Out City Ambulance Service
- Mobile Mortuary
